Job Summary
The Director of Engineering will manage the team members in charge of technology execution and continuous improvement of Trinity’s technology. Engineering at Trinity Logistics involves the understanding of Trinity strategic and business unit needs and the design of effective means for the execution and delivery of technology solutions to meet those needs. Additionally, this role will work on leading innovation initiatives, supporting career progression and team management, and establishing best practice processes for technology approach, execution, and delivery across our engineering practices. The Director of Engineering will drive, alongside senior staff and leadership, the development and application of best practices regarding architecture methodologies, technology governance frameworks, work transparency and reporting, and ensuring documentation of technologies and processes. This position will report to the Chief Technology Officer and will manage the Software Engineering, Integrations, QA, DevOps, Architecture, Data Engineering, and Business Intelligence teams.
Essential Functions
- Create and maintain a detailed engineering roadmap that outlines key projects, timelines, and milestones. Ensure alignment with organizational strategy, customers, other technology departments, and key stakeholders.
- Attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent. Build a high-performing engineering team capable of meeting the company's technological needs.
- Create and drive forward processes and procedures to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the engineering practices.
- Work with engineering managers to set clear team and individual performance goals, conduct regular performance reviews, and provide ongoing feedback and development opportunities for team members.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with executive leadership, providing updates on engineering progress, challenges, and successes.
- Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging the team to explore new technologies and approaches that can drive the business forward.
- Develop and implement comprehensive career path programs for technology team members to ensure continuous personal and professional development.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement, encouraging team members to pursue further education and professional development opportunities.
- Participate actively in industry groups, representing the company and contributing to the advancement of industry standards and practices.
- Drive the externalization of technology by promoting the company's engineering achievements and innovations to the broader tech community.
- Collaborate with Team Services and executive management to align engineering career development programs with organizational objectives and industry trends.
- Mentor and support team members in their pursuit of career goals, providing guidance and resources to facilitate their growth.
- Assist in the design and implementation of compensation models for the technology group.
- Support the fiscal year planning process by collaborating on the portfolio of projects, budget, etc.
Job Qualifications
- Experience: 8 or more years in the technology field with increasing responsibility/scope.
- At least 5 years of experience in a senior management role (e.g., Director of Engineering, Senior Engineering Manager, VP of Engineering/IT).
- In-depth knowledge of software development methodologies, tools, and processes and the ability to implement and maintain those processes effectively.
- Experience with low and high-code development technologies, cloud computing, DevOps, and modern infrastructure technologies.
- Understanding of data architecture, security, and scalability.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse, remote engineering team.
- Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans and roadmaps.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders in and outside of the technology department.
- Ability to align engineering processes with overall business objectives.
- Understanding financial principles and budget management.
- Expertise in making data-driven decisions and analyzing performance metrics.
- Ability to foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and customer-centricity.
- Willingness to stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies.
- Some travel required.

Work Environment / Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands, arms and fingers to handle and lift objects up to 20 pounds. Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice.

Position deals with a variety of problems and must decide which answer is best. The question/issues are typically clear and require determination of which answer (from a few choices) is the best. Existing knowledge of 3PL/4PL operations is a requirement.
