Director of Engineering
Position Summary:
The Director of Engineering is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing all engineering and facilities operations at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. This executive-level position ensures the integrity, safety, and long-term sustainability of resort assets while aligning engineering initiatives with the resort’s luxury brand standards and business objectives.
Essential Duties:
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for all engineering functions, ensuring operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and guest satisfaction.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive preventative maintenance and capital improvement strategy to protect and enhance hotel assets.
- Manage and oversee CIP projects to include RFP’s, bids, scope, on-site supervision, budget, and schedule management.
- Lead long-range planning for infrastructure upgrades, energy efficiency initiatives, and fixed asset replacement across the resort.
- Negotiate and manage high-value vendor contracts and service agreements, leveraging economies of scale across properties.
- Collaborate with ownership and executive leadership to align engineering goals with financial targets, sustainability objectives, and brand standards.
- Oversee departmental budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance, including operating and capital expenditures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIOSH, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Championing a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement within the engineering teams.
Other Duties:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing, multi-property engineering team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence.
- Establish and enforce policies, procedures, and performance standards consistent with luxury hospitality operations.
- Oversee staffing, training, and labor relations in accordance with company policies and collective bargaining agreements.
- Conduct regular site inspections, project reviews, and performance evaluations to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Direct the execution of major repair projects, renovations, and function setups across the resort utilizing GXP, Transcendent and other company programs.
- Monitor and optimize energy usage and implement conservation programs to support environmental sustainability goals. Update property statistics in MESH.
- Serve as the primary liaison between engineering and other hotel departments, ensuring seamless communication and operational synergy.
- Represent the engineering function in strategic planning sessions and ownership presentations.
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to travel between property and work in both office and field environments.
- Availability to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Proficient in engineering software, property management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Work Hours:
- Must be able to work a schedule set by the General Manager or Hotel Manager.
- Must be able to work long and irregular hours.
- Must be able to work more than 50 hours per week.
Equipment Use:
- Proficient in the use of a computer and with the resort’s word, spreadsheet and other required software.
- Ability to use the telephone or radio.
- Ability to use various office equipment including but not limited to calculators, photocopiers and facsimile machines.
- Operate a utility vehicle to travel within the resort.
Mental and Physical Demands:
- Ability to prioritize and organize workload to ensure deadlines are met.
- Able to manage stressful and challenging situations.
- Able to stand and walk during most of shift.
- Able to sit at a desk to do administrative duties.
Communication Demands:
- Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing to employees, department managers, and guests/clients.
- Ability to communicate over the phone.
Minimum Qualifications Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field; advanced degree or certifications preferred.
- Minimum 6–8 years of progressive engineering leadership experience in a luxury resort.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex capital projects.
- Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting, forecasting, and ROI analysis.
- Expertise in building systems, energy management, and regulatory compliance.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications.
